Case Study on Tough pH Sensors

Chlor-Alkali pH Sensors Case Study

At a US chlor-alkali site, pH and ORP measurements in harsh conditions were extremely problematic. The site has over 35 pH installation points, most of which are critical for production and  the engineers were frustrated with the performance of the pH sensors they were using.

METTLER TOLEDO was given the opportunity to show that we could make these measurement points more reliable, less expensive and safer to operate with InPro 4850i sensors.

The InPro 4850i is specifically for chlor-alkali processes. As well as a pH-sensitive glass membrane, it features a sodium-sensitive membrane that uses the sodium concentration in the process as a reference. The sodium-sensitive reference is a completely closed system: No diaphragm exists, therefore the possibility of sensor poisoning or clogging is eliminated.

Probably the single most important factor for any chlor-alkali plant is employee safety. The InPro 4850i and InPro 4260i both feature Intelligent Sensor Management (ISM®) digital technology. One of ISMʼs main features is the ability to calibrate sensors away from the process in a safe and convenient environment. And thanks to the Plug and Measure feature, when sensor exchange is required, it is a simple case of removing the current sensor and replacing it with a pre-calibrated one.
