Engaged in the manufacture of sugar, power, bioethanol and biofertilizer a major Indian company has been producing sugar from cane since the 1940s. To ensure sugar whiteness and purity, its largest mill uses the double sulphitation process: juice sulphitation followed by syrup sulphitation. pH control is important in both, not just for reasons of maintaining sugar quality and yield, but also to minimize fouling of tube surfaces in heaters and evaporators.
But many sensors do not tolerate the sulphitation conditions. For the Indian mill, switching to a METTLER TOLEDO solution has reduced operating costs due to significantly extended sensor lifetime, and has led to higher process yield.
METTLER TOLEDO offers solutions for monitoring sulphitation that deliver dependable and accurate measurements, and are low in maintenance. The in-line pH sensor InPro® 4260i has a number of features that allow it to tolerate applications with a high concentration of particulate matter. The sensor is part of the METTLER TOLEDO Intelligent Sensor Management (ISM®) range and contains advanced predictive diagnostics that inform users as to when sensor cleaning, calibration or replacement will be required. Maintenance can therefore take place when it is needed, rather than waiting until sensor measurement performance is reduced, or conducting regular maintenance that might not be required.
