Sulfate Content Determination in Water with UV Vis Spectroscopy

Easy and Quick Analysis Using a Specialized Merck Spectroquant Test Kit 1.19813

This application note provides a method for determining the sulfate content in water using METTLER TOLEDO's UV/VIS spectrophotometer.

Why Is Sulfate Determination Important?

Sulfate is a naturally occurring substance that can be found in various sources of water. The United States code of federal regulation has set a maximum limit of 250 mg/L for sulfate concentration in drinking water; hence, its determination is important.

How Is Sulfate Content Determined?

To carry out this application, a Spectroquant® Merck Test Kit is utilized. A turbidimetric analysis is conducted, where barium ions react with sulfate ions to generate barium sulfate opacity. The measurement of light scattering resulting from barium sulfate turbidity is determined by absorbance at 525 nm using a METTLER TOLEDO UV/VIS spectrophotometer.
