What Is the Need for the Determination of Copper Content?

Copper is an essential element for the functioning of the human body. However, excess copper can cause vomiting, diarrhea, stomach cramps, nausea, liver, and kidney damage. Copper can get into household drinking water via the plumbing system. The Environmental Protection Agency has set a maximum allowable limit of copper in drinking water as 1.3 mg/L. Hence, it is crucial to determine the copper content in water.

 

How to Determine Copper Content?

In an ammoniacal medium, copper (II) ion forms a blue complex with cuprizone which can be determined photometrically at 605 nm. This is exploited in the present method for the quantitative determination of copper in water using METTLER TOLEDO's EasyPlus UV/VIS spectrophotometer by employing the Spectroquant® Merck Copper Test Kit (Merck 1.14553). This method serves as a quick and easy quality check for water.
