Why should you quantify aluminium in battery wastewater?

Waste water obtained from the battery manufacturing unit contains aluminium, one of the metal among other metals. When discharged into water bodies, this wastewater can adversely affect the environment and living organisms. Aluminium is believed to be one of the causes of the development of Alzheimer's disease, and its hydroxide form affects benthos and other aquatic plants adversely as its precipitate covers the bottom of water bodies. The presence of large amounts of aluminium hydroxide precipitate also impairs the gill function of fish. Hence, it is very important to check aluminium content.

How do you quantify aluminium content in battery wastewater spectrophotometrically?

Aluminium can be quantified by UV Vis Spectrophotometer using an aluminon indicator at a wavelength of  527nm.  Aluminium forms an orange-red colour complex with aluminon, where the intensity of the colour is directly proportional to the concentration of aluminium.
