A Quick Check to Ensure Quality Standards Are Met

This application note provides a method for content determination of niacinamide present in tablets for label claims using METTLER TOLEDO's UV/VIS spectrophotometer.

What Is Niacinamide?

Niacinamide, a component of vitamin B3 that is soluble in water, is used to treat ailments resulting from a deficiency of vitamin B3 in the body. Its use is most prevalent in the cosmetic industry, where it has been demonstrated to be effective in addressing various skin conditions such as acne, rosacea, redness, and the prevention of melanoma. In addition to this, it can help normalize cholesterol levels and manage chronic kidney disease. Furthermore, it can assist in treating symptoms like loss of appetite, weakness, diarrhea, skin inflammation, and cognitive changes.

How Is Niacinamide Content Determined?

The US Pharmacopeia specifies a method for determining the percentage label claim of niacinamide by measuring the absorbance ratio of the standard niacinamide and the niacinamide tablet at 262 nm. This method is adapted and considered the standard test for quantitative analysis of niacinamide.
