Why determine the water content of acetone?

Acetone has wide applications in different segments, such as paints, varnishes, cosmetics, food, explosives, cleaning agents, etc. It is also a key component in pharmaceuticals, as it is used for solubilizing various drugs and as a starting material. The presence of water, even in traces, can alter its properties and sensitivity to certain reactions. Therefore, determining the water content of acetone is essential.

Why use K-reagents while measuring water content of ketones and aldehydes?

Aldehydes (R-CHO) and ketones (R-CO-R) tend to form acetals and ketals, forming water as a side product when titrated with standard methanol-containing reagents. This leads to an increase in the water content of the samples due to the introduction of water from solvents. Hence, methanol-free K reagents are used to suppress these side reactions as they contain longer-chain alcohol and other organic solvents, thus minimizing side reactions.
