Polarographic sensors can be high maintenance
Process reliability and batch to batch consistency are essential in the biotech industry. One key analytical parameter that can have a significant influence on fermentation efficiency is dissolved oxygen. DO is normally measured using polarographic sensors and these have served the biotech industry well for many years. But they require lengthy polarization and can be cumbersome and time consuming to maintain.

Optical dissolved oxygen measurement technology offers a low maintenance, high performance alternative. Optical sensors use fluorescence quenching to accurately and rapidly determine DO levels. Unlike polarographic sensors, optical sensors do not contain electrolyte, so they do not need polarizing. And the only part in an optical sensor that needs periodic replacement is the oxygen-sensitive element.

To this advanced technology METTLER TOLEDO has added Intelligent Sensor Management (ISM®), bringing further valuable benefits such as predictive diagnostics. The Dynamic Lifetime Indicator and Adaptive Calibration Timer tools tell operators when sensor maintenance will be required.
