Importance of the Melting Point of Rubber Chemicals

In rubber manufacture, different chemical substances are added to the polymer mass. Some of these are effective in production, for example vulcanization accelerators, while others play an important role in the finished product, e.g. antioxidants.
The quality of such chemical constituents must be tested before they are used in production. This is commonly done using the ASTM D1519 standard test method.

Measurement according to the ASTM D1519 Standard

With this application note you will learn to determine the melting range of rubber chemicals according to ASTM D1519 using the METTLER TOLEDO Melting Point Excellence.

Measurements were performed for the following substances:

  • Tetraethylthiuram disulfide (TETD), which is used as a vulcanization accelerator,
  • Phenyl-beta-naphthylamine (PBNA), which is used as an antioxidant for elastomers and
  • Mercaptobenzothiazole (MBT), which acts both as a vulcanization accelerator in rubber production and as an antioxidant in the finished product.
