This white paper describes how the cycle time for an intermediate crystallization step was reduced by 60% using a simple image analysis method.  A quantitative measurement of crystallization progression, based on real time microcopy images, was used to identify unnecessary hold times and determine how cooling rate influenced crystal growth and nucleation. An optimized process was developed that reduced cycle time while maintain a similar crystal size and shape. The feasibility of removing a difficult seeding step from the process was also investigated using the technique. While the unseeded process showed promise, it was demonstrated that a series of temperature cycles was needed to achieve the desired final crystal size and shape. Finally, a brief comparison of the image analysis method to monitor crystallization processes was conducted to help benchmark the new technique against a more traditional method.
