Fighting corrosion

In many industrial processes, measuring the quantity of water vapor in gas streams is essential for product quality purposes and to prevent damage to plant equipment from corrosion. Fast, accurate measurement is therefore prerequisite for moisture sensors.

Wet chlorine gas produced during the chlor-alkali process is very corrosive and must be dried immediately. For Inovyn, Europe's largest producer of chlorine, monitoring the efficiency of their chlorine drying process is vital. But the long reaction time and high maintenance of the electrolytic P2O5 sensors they were using was causing concern and a better solution was required.

Non-contacting method of gas measurement

METTLER TOLEDO's tunable diode laser (TDL) GPro 500 sensor, provides a highly reliable method of measuring a range of gases, either directly in the process or in a sample stream. The laser beam output by the TDL is tuned to scan the wavelength in the electromagnetic spectrum where absorption lines of the target species are present. Analysis of the depleted light provides the measurement of the gas level.

TDLs are non-contact sensors for gas measurement and do not have any moving parts. They are therefore very low on maintenance.

Another significant benefit of TDLs is their rapid response: the GPro 500 has a t90 response time of less than two seconds!

Find out in our success story how the GPro 500 is now providing Inovyn with:

  • Greater process confidence
  • High measurement accuracy
  • Low maintenance costs
