Why Is Boron Determination in Water Important? 

Boron concentration in seawater is in the range of 4–5 ppm, while river water contains 10 ppb. Most of the boron salts such as boric acid, borax, and boron trioxide are water-soluble. Natural processes such as weathering release the boron present in soil and ore into the water. Boron-containing compounds such as sodium perborate are used as bleaching agents in detergents which form borate in water. Daily intake of boron above 5 g of boric acid causes a negative impact on the human body such as vomiting, nausea, diarrhea, and blood clotting. Boric acid can also cause skin and eye irritation. Therefore, it is important to determine the amount of boron in water to ensure its quality.
 

How Is Boron Content in Water Determined?

Boron in water samples can be determined using a Merck Spectroquant® Test Kit 1.00826 and METTLER TOLEDO's EasyPlus UV/VIS spectrophotometers. In this method, borate reacts with azomethine-H to form a yellow-colored compound under a weakly acidic solution, and its absorbance is determined at 420 nm to estimate its concentration. This method is analogous to DIN 38405-17.
