As the modalities of chemical reactions become more complex, complete data capture becomes even more critical to process understanding. While the iControl software is a powerful tool to capture and visualize reaction data, the environment is not well suited to the integration of outside data streams. By leveraging edge I/O, Node-Red, and Mettler’s iC OPC UA, data streams from laboratory devices can be incorporated into a single environment for reaction monitoring, process control, and visualization.
Additionally, efforts to develop a distillation platform for both put/take and continuous modes will be described. The key to this unit operation is the use of temperature sensors as a means for level detection and the iControl “phase” function for repetitive tasks.
Westin Morrill
Scientist, Process Chemistry, AbbVie
Westin Morrill received his BS from Portland State University, under the guidance of Dr. David Peyton. He went on to get an MS from the University of Oregon’s Materials Science Institute. Currently, Westin is a Sr. Scientist at AbbVie where he is part of the Innovative Chemical Technologies group embedded in Process Chemistry. His work has spanned all stages of development and focuses on the application of technology to solve synthetic problems. He is a recipient of the TAOC (technical achievements in organic chemistry) and the ACS Heros of Chemistry awards.
