The concept of composite sensor array is illustrated by integrating two PAT tools with other in situ and inline analytical technologies. Sensor models of the probes will be presented that allow the use of the information provided by this systems in the implementation of a novel model predictive control approaches. The sensor model coupled with 2D population balance model of the crystallization system allows the model-based design and control of crystal size and shape in crystallization processes.
Integration of these tools with inline UPLC is also illustrated a comprehensive crystallization monitoring platform, integrated in the Crystallization Process Informatics System. The application of automated direct nucleation control (DNC) to integrated continuous crystallization and wet milling processes will be discussed. A novel process intensification approach via continuous spherical plug-flow crystallization with feedback control will also be presented. These case studies and novel applications and approaches represent the foundation of the new quality-by-control (QbC) paradigm, in which reliable, robust PAT tools represent a critical role.
