Rainin has long sought to minimize the impact of our operations on the environment. From recycling and reuse, to designing products in ways that minimize waste, we're committed to providing customers with the highest quality products in the most efficient and environmentally responsible way available. Below we have highlighted some of these efforts.
Our multifaceted approach to sustainability
Saving Energy and Reducing Waste
Our corporate office and state-of-the-art manufacturing facility employs an array of technologies aimed at shrinking the company’s energy use. Our energy provider, Pacific Gas & Electric, commended Rainin’s power-saving initiatives for having reduced greenhouse gas emissions by 224 tons annually.
Scrap Recycling
We optimize each product for manufacturing to scrap. What scrap there is, is re-ground and molded into other products where precision and absolute purity are less critical. For example, scrap polypropylene and polyethylene is carefully collected, ground and remanufactured into tip trays.
Responsible Product Packaging
Rainin has eliminated unnecessary shrink wrap and superfluous packaging material in product containers. Our product boxes are made from 100% recycled fiber and the shells of our waste-reducing SpaceSaver tip refills are made from recycled water bottles (PETE).
Recycled/Recyclable Shipping Containers
Rainin uses unbleached, easily-degradable shipping boxes made of natural brown cardboard. Most of these boxes contain 59% recycled paper fiber, 44% of which is comes from post-consumer sources. To promote reuse in our Service program, every time a customer reuses a return kit or downloads a free shipping label, we pay American Forests to plant a tree.
Local Supply Chain and Manufacturing
Rainin Purchasing works aggressively to source raw materials and services from local suppliers and distributors. By doing so, we support our local communities and reduce our use of energy-intensive transportation.
Minimizing Waste
We have an ongoing effort to reduce our use of printed forms and marketing collateral, shifting where we can to web-based technologies to gather and distribute information. Most hard copy literature is now printed "on demand" to minimize waste and spoilage.
A Good Neighbor
When Rainin built its Oakland, California manufacturing facility, it helped restore a nearby wetland, making part of the facility site into public access to the wildlife preserve. Each year our employees also participate in an annual California Coastal Clean-Up Day, cleaning trash and debris from the preserve’s shoreline.
