This application note provides the complete procedure for determining the fluoride content in water and dental products by measuring the absorbance of Alizarin zirconyl complex using METTLER TOLEDO UV Vis spectrophotometer.
Fluoride is one of the essential nutrients, which plays a major role in preventing tooth decay. On the contrary excess of fluoride content has deterimental effects on human health. If drinking water and eatables are excessively high in fluoride content then dental fluorosis, skeletal fluorosis and bone fracture are the most relevant adverse effects.
Hence an accurate analytical method is required to estimate the permissible fluoride content in water and dental products as per the WHO.The fluoride content can be evaluated from the absorption spectra of alizarin zirconyl complex using UV Vis spectrophotometer.
Alizarin Zirconyl Complex
The complex is prepared by combining sample solution with Alizarin red S solution and zirconyl nitrate solution. The absorbance of the complex solution is measured at 530 nm against deionized water as blank. The calibration curve constructed for fluoride standards in the desired concentration range helps in elucidating the exact fluoride concentration present in water samples, toothpaste and oral fluoride supplements.
