The application gives a method to determine the cobalt content of lithium cobalt oxide based cathode material.
Background
The most common Lithium Ion battery type uses lithium cobalt oxide (LiCoO2) as cathode. In order to form lithium cobalt oxide (LiCoO2), lithium carbonate (Li2CO3) is mixed with cobalt oxide (Co3O4). The mixture is heated under an oxygen atmosphere to form the active electrode material. The cobalt content determination is a routine quality check and gives an indication on the purity of the cathode material.
Photometric titration is used to determine the cobalt content using murexide as color indicator and the DP5 phototrode as sensor.
