Our tutorial offers a general introduction to thermal analysis (TA), which is applicable to all industries from R&D to quality control.
TA covers a range of techniques that measure the physical properties of a substance, as a function of temperature, whilst being subjected to a controlled temperature program.
Materials characterization is dedicated to the thorough analysis and development of new materials, as well as for their quality control through periodic monitoring. Thermal analysis consists of the following four well-established techniques:
- Differential Scanning Calorimetry, or DSC,
- Thermogravimetric Analysis, or TGA,
- Thermomechanical Analysis, or TMA,
- and Dynamic Mechanical Analysis, or DMA
In DSC, heat flow and its related specific heat capacity is measured; TGA records mass loss; TMA determines length changes in the nanometer range and DMA provides modulus values.
