In sugar beet refining, reliable pH measurements are central to producing a high yield of good quality sugar. For the Lesaffre Sugar Refinery in Nangis, France sensor performance is critical.

For pH measurement, Lesaffre was using antimony pH sensors with a motorized scraper ring that would periodically remove fouling from the probes. Unhappy with the high cost of maintenance to keep the sensors operating, they came across METTLER TOLEDO's InPro 4800i pH sensor with Intelligent Sensor Management (ISM).

The InPro 4800i electrode is equipped with a very long diffusion path in a double electrolyte chamber and a PTFE-coated junction. Thanks to these characteristics, the InPro 4800i exhibits very good resistance to sulfur contamination, temperature tolerance up to 130 °C and due to the PTFE coating of the junction, measurements are ensured even in the most sticky environments.

Another feature of the sensor, Intelligent Sensor Management (ISM), provides additional valuable benefits:

  • High signal stability due to digital communication between sensor and transmitter.
  • Dynamic Lifetime Indicator continuously monitors sensor condition and predicts when replacement will be required.
  • Adaptive Calibration Timer estimates the time remaining before the next calibration should be performed.
  • iSense PC software enables sensor calibration away from the process in any convenient location and provides calibration reports in PDF format.
