With Automated Sensor Cleaning and Calibration

Case study on automated sensor maintenance system to solve pH measurement issues
Case study on automated sensor maintenance system to solve pH measurement issues

Numerous production processes demand precise, real-time control of pH levels. To ensure accurate measurements, in-line pH sensors must remain clean and properly calibrated. Therefore, frequent sensor maintenance may be essential in order to safeguard process consistency and product quality. This can place extra pressure on stretched maintenance resources.

Swiss Saltworks, Switzerland, wanted to solve pH measurement issues in a critical carbonization process. METTLER TOLEDO was pleased to demonstrate our EasyClean 500 system to them. EasyClean 500 is a compact cleaning and calibration solution for fully automated maintenance of in-line pH as well as ORP and oxygen sensors. The only technician intervention on the system is periodic refilling of cleaning and buffer solutions plus occasional sensor exchanges.

Cleaning and calibration can be initiated in two ways: either through fixed intervals set in the connected transmitter or remotely via a PLC/DCS. Furthermore, sensor calibration can be activated only as needed, depending on the sensor’s condition. This capability is made possible by Intelligent Sensor Management (ISM™), METTLER TOLEDO’s digital technology for process analytics.

The EasyClean 500 offers six preset programs along with two customizable options, giving operators complete control over the duration and frequency of cleaning cycles. A diverse selection of cleaning agents can be utilized for sensor maintenance.

The demonstrated system included the EasyClean 500 unit with canisters for cleaning and buffer solutions, a pH sensor that operates reliably in saline environments, a retractable housing, and a 2-wire transmitter for programming and control.
