Chemical reactions that are highly reactive and risk-prone, often characterized by low activation energies and high exothermicity, can be challenging to develop and control due to the energy stored in their components. Individual reagents, reactants, intermediates, and products present during synthesis contain bonds that store energy and can release it rapidly in the form of heat, light, and other forms of energy, posing significant safety risks.

To ensure safe, stable, and well-performing reactions and processes, it is critical to have precise measurement capability and an in-depth understanding of the underlying reaction kinetics, thermodynamics, and the effect of numerous variables on the outcome and performance.

Technology that provides insight into the behavior of these hazardous chemicals and energetic processes has become increasingly available and can be leveraged to ensure thorough safety and risk assessment characterization.

This research collection summarizes recent articles from the global chemistry literature that show how ReactIR™ in-situ FTIR and RC1mx, EasyMax™, and Optimax™ calorimeters can be used to elucidate foundational information that advances safer chemistry and processes. We present examples across common functional groups and reaction types, including:

  • Azide
  • Diazo
  • Grignard
  • Halogen
  • Organolithium
  • Peroxides
