Learn How to Prepare Samples for TGA and Choose from Various Semi- Or Fully Automatic Weigh-in Modes

TGA sample preparation and weigh-in

Adequate sample preparation is critical for achieving accurate and reproducible TGA results – from the right choice of crucible and sample amounts, to the correct cleaning method for reusable crucibles.

Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) measures the mass of a sample subjected to a temperature program in a defined atmosphere.

Samples for TGA can be weighed in using one of the following procedures:

  1. TGA internal balance: A TGA fitted with a sample changer automatically tares and weighs in samples.
  2. If an experiment is running, weigh-ins can be performed using an external balance connected to STARe software (see video).
  3. STARe can also be networked to a METTLER TOLEDO balance via LabX for secure electronic data transfer (see video).

In this video, we show you how to prepare powder, polymer fiber and metal samples for TGA and demonstrate how to weigh in samples using a sample changer and internal balance.

The right crucible is key

The quality of a TGA measurement depends on the measuring cell as well as the sample preparation procedure and choice of crucible. Crucibles with flat bases as those offered by METTLER TOLEDO ensure perfect thermal contact with the sample, minimize the appearance of artifacts and permit optimum heat transfer – even at extremely low temperature gradients. In addition, crucibles can be automatically loaded or removed from the TGA measuring cell using the sample robot.
