How to Test the Quality of Hydrochloric Acid? 

Hydrochloric acid (HCl) is an extensively used reagent in various industrial segments. The acid strength and impurity levels are important in many uses of HCl. One of the common impurities in HCl is iron (Fe). Fe reacts with HCl to form the corresponding Fe-salt with the evolution of hydrogen gas, thus, affecting the purity of hydrochloric acid. Hence, determining Fe content in HCl is important for its quality check.

 

How Is Iron Content in Hydrochloric Acid Determined?

This application is focused on the quantitative determination of Fe content in HCl using a METTLER TOLEDO EasyPlus UV/VIS spectrophotometer by measuring the colored complex of reduced Fe(II) with 1,10-phenanthroline (orthophenanthroline) at 510 nm.
