Wine Color Determination Using UV Vis Spectroscopy

A Non-destructive, Fast and Easy Technique to Test the Quality of Wine

This application note provides a method for analyzing wine color using METTLER TOLEDO's EasyPlus UV/VIS spectrophotometer.

Why Is Wine Color Analysis Important?

Color is an important quality indicator of wine. Wine consists of phenolic compounds such as anthocyanin, tannin, and flavanol apart from water and alcohol, which provides the wine with unique color, aroma, and flavor. Anthocyanins and tannins are responsible for the red color and flavonols control the color of white wines. The color of the wine changes with wine processing practices and time. Hence, it is important to measure the color of the wine to assess its quality.

How to Determine Wine Color?

An easy and non-destructive way to analyze wine is by simply measuring the absorbance from 360-830 nm wavelength using a METTLER TOLEDO EasyPlus UV/VIS spectrophotometer for the quantitative determination of the color of wine.
