Background

Lithium ions react with ammonium fluoride to lithium fluoride, which is insoluble in ethanol. The course of the titration can be monitored using a solid state fluoride selective electrode as the fluoride concentration strongly increases as soon as all the lithium ions are consumed. As an example, the purity of lithium nitrate is assessed in this application note. The same method can be used for other lithium salts that are soluble in ethanol.
