Installation improves processes
The installation of two autotitrators has increased sample throughput and efficiency for a leading UKAS accredited contract laboratory.
ILS (International Laboratory Services) is one of the largest independent suppliers of contract laboratory services in the UK, providing a full range of UKAS accredited and GMP compliant chemical and microbiological analyses primarily to the food and pharmaceutical industries.
UKAS accredited company
ILS offers high scientific standards, speedy service and competitive prices. Its two main divisions - food and pharmaceutical - have their own skilled scientists and support staff to offer a comprehensive range of testing and consultancy services. Since its UKAS accreditation, achieved in 1991, the company has continued to expand the range of tests undertaken resulting in one of the largest UKAS scopes in the UK.
Automating titration
The site has been designed to respond to the increasing demand for quality control and batch release testing by a third party laboratory. With extensive experience in method development, validation and transfer, the laboratories are MCA approved for GMP compliance and offer a complete range of Pharmacopoeia testing covering raw materials, intermediaries and finished products.
An increase in workload meant manual titration was no longer viable and the company needed to find an alternative solution. Following a product demonstration and consultation with their METTLER TOLEDO Account Manager and Titration Product Specialist, ILS decided the DL50 Graphix autotitrator would be the best option. Simon Leigh, Laboratory Manager, explains, “the titrator was similar to other products available on the market but the combination of price, after sales service and support as well as the excellent relationship we have with METTLER TOLEDO made the decision easy.”
Application solutions
As it is a contract laboratory the instrument needed to handle a wide range of applications. “Raw materials are tested in accordance with the BP/EP/USP/JP regulations,” says Simon, “but we also use it for ICH storage stability trials and calibration of analytical standard solutions. In addition we are undertaking acid base and redox titrations.”
The DL50 Graphix autotitrator monitors on-line titration curves so you can see the titration is going to plan. Programming is easy and at the end of the titration the printed report contains the all information required to ensure full compliance withregulatory bodies.
Versatile analysis
The versatile titrator can be used for a variety of applications in almost any industry. It is ideal for testing raw materials or finished products as well as controlling production processes and improving the accuracy of analyses. Its numerous features, including end point and equivalence titration, were some of the reasons ILS chose this instrument. In addition the DL50 is supplied with four METTLER TOLEDO methods for common applications which can easily be adapted and has the ability to store an additional 50 user methods – making it very user friendly.
Mastering moisture determination
ILS also required another titrator to test water content. The DL32 coulometer is ideal for simple routine determinations using the Karl Fischer method. Available with or without a diaphragm further enhances application possibilities. A PC connection and cable plus Mettler Toldeo LabX light software are supplied as standard, making it easy to edit and manage methods as well as re-evaluating and statistically analysing data.
With the installation of the new equipment productivity has increased. “It has increased sample throughput and its ease of use makes it the ideal purchase. We have increased turnaround times and efficiency and improved the service we offer our clients,” concludes Simon Leigh.
