Whether you produce food, non-food, or pharmaceutical products, having a metal detection solution on your production line helps you improve product safety and quality, meet compliance needs, and help protect your brand and reputation. Choosing the most appropriate metal detection solution for your product inspection needs is crucial to achieving the best results.

Once you have made the decision to invest in a metal detection solution, there are a number of things to consider, such as product characteristics and where the solution will need to be installed along your production line. Our Metal Detection Portfolio Infographic provides a step-by-step guide on finding the most suitable solution for your application.

Helping you choose the right system

This simple Metal Detection Portfolio Infographic provides a useful overview of our metal detection systems and takes you through the process of how to choose the most suitable solution suited to your application. Whether you are looking for a standard system or something more complex, we have a solution to meet your needs.

Key considerations when choosing a metal detection system

1. What products are you inspecting?

The type of product you will be inspecting, along with the location of the Critical Control Point (CCP), will help determine the most suitable solution. It is also important to consider your main business drivers. For example, if you are simply looking to achieve affordable compliance and your products are on a conveyor belt at the selected CCP, the M31R is a great option for both dry and wet applications. When inspecting bulk product the M33RB metal detector is a great choice, or you can maximize your sensitivity performance with a Profile RB. However, food that is wet, chilled, hot or in metalized film packaging will benefit from the M34R, or when you need far greater detection capabilities in these challenging applications, choose the Profile Advantage.

METTLER TOLEDO offers metal detection solutions for almost any possible manufacturing application - for example, metal detectors for gravity-fed inspection of dry powders and granular products such as nuts, confectionery and savory snack foods; pipeline systems for liquids and pumped products; and pharmaceutical metal detection systems for tablets, capsules, and powders. Our range of pipeline systems are tailored to address specific requirements, from integration with vacuum fillers for pumped sausage meat to overcoming bubbles and voids in the product flow of pumped liquids, pastes and slurries.

2. Will the metal detector be part of an integrated system?

If opting for a tunnel metal detector, purchasing this as an integrated conveyorized solution supports maximum reliability and minimizes false rejects, without compromising on sensitivity. If opting for a vertical metal detector, consider how this will be integrated with the rest of your production line. Throat metal detectors from METTLER TOLEDO are designed specifically for use with Vertical Form Fill and Seal processes situated between the multi-head weigher and bagmaker. Our range of Gravity Fall metal detection systems offer a choice of integrated reject devices tailored to different product formats, ranging from granular products to high value, dusty powders.

3. How will your metal-contaminated products be rejected?

There are a number of reject devices available when using an integrated metal detection system from METTLER TOLEDO. Options for conveyorized systems range from simple stop-on-detection mechanisms to more sophisticated detect-and-reject systems such as air blasts, pushers, drop flaps and retracting bands. For gravity-fed applications, the type of product will determine which solution you opt for, for example a Sealtite Gravity Fall system will be most suitable for high value powders and dusty products, whereas a Y-valve is ideal when frequent changeovers are likely and rapid cleaning is essential to minimize downtime. When it comes to pipeline metal detection systems, we offer a wide range of application-specific reject devices. For tablets and capsules, choose from side diverter or lift flap reject devices on our Tablex range of metal detectors.
