What is an oxygen analyzer?

An oxygen analyzer is a system for measuring oxygen in a gas stream. It is made up of a sensor, a transmitter and a process adaption or housing. For measuring oxygen in situ, METTLER TOLEDO offers both tunable diode laser oxygen analyzers and amperometric oxygen analyzers.  

METTLER TOLEDO oxygen analyzers are unique in that they do not need sampling or conditioning systems (SCS) so they can provide a fast and accurate measurement with minimal maintenance.

What gas analyzer technology does METTLER TOLEDO offer?

METTLER TOLEDO offers two gas analyzer technologies. These two technologies are tunable diode laser (TDL) spectroscopy and amperometric (or polarographic) technology.   

METTLER TOLEDO’s TDL oxygen analyzer technology is immune to most interferences and the sensor’s materials of construction are very robust. There is no regular maintenance required, and the sensor is designed for long-term continuous operation. TDL is suited for the most challenging and critical applications. The physical package is larger than the amperometric gas sensors, so it has different installation requirements

Amperometric oxygen sensors use an electrochemical measurement technology housed in a compact package. It is a depleting technology; therefore, some maintenance and consumables are required. Chemical interference is possible, and knowledge of the gas composition is required for evaluation.

What types of systems are gas analyzers able to be installed in?

METTLER TOLEDO's portfolio of gas analyzers is flexible for a wide range of applications and is able to be installed in various types of systems.

The tunable diode laser gas analyzer offers a wide range of process adaptions for measurement wherever you need it. With adaptions for small or wide pipes, dirty gas streams, fast or slow-flowing gas streams, and hot gas streams, this analyzer is very versatile to meet your installation requirements. Also, due to its folded path design, it does not need manual alignment.

The amperometric sensors are a standard 12 mm sensor and can be installed in most standard process vessels, making them optimal for applications such as headspace monitoring.

What is the difference between gas detectors and analyzers?

The main difference between a gas detector and a gas analyzer is that a gas detector is used to alert a user when the level of a certain gas is too high in a confined space, whereas a gas analyzer is used to provide accurate readings of the immediate atmosphere.

What are the different measurement techniques used in oxygen gas analyzers?

There are many technologies available for oxygen gas measurement to analyze different types of gases present in the environment or the ones that are released from industrial processes. The most common techniques are:

  • Tunable Diode Laser Oxygen Measurement
  • Paramagnetic Oxygen Measurement
  • Zirconia Oxygen Measurement
  • Amperometric Oxygen Measurement

 

Does gas analyzer equipment need maintenance and calibration?

In general, proper calibration and maintenance of your gas analyzer equipment are required due to industry safety regulations. However, METTLER TOLEDO’s tunable diode laser oxygen analyzer uses software to “lock” its measurement to the wavelength where the target gas absorbs light. This means it does not drift and is effectively calibration free. That being said, demanding processes can have a harsh impact on instrument corrosion or contamination of the sensor’s optics. With METTLER TOLEDO’s preventative maintenance services, easy parts exchange can be done swiftly on your schedule to avoid instrument downtime and prolong replacement cycles.

What does a gas analyzer do?

A gas analyzer monitors and controls the concentration of gases for different purposes in industrial processes. They can be used to ensure the safety of the environment, people, and assets and/or to increase process efficiency.

What are the types of gas analyzers?

There are many types of gas analyzers that all use different types of sensors to measure different gas concentrations. The sensor type and technology used will highly depend on the parameter that needs to be measured and whether or not multiple parameters need to be measured at the same time (multi-gas analyzer). Common types of gas analyzer include:

  • Tunable Diode Laser Spectrometers (TDLs)

GPro® 500 Tunable Diode Laser (TDL) analyzers provide the highest level of reliability and fastest response time in process control and safety applications. Membrane covered InPro amperometric oxygen sensors are largely insensitive to moisture and dust, making them ideally suited for inerting and blanketing applications.
