T&L Solutions for Weighing and Dimensioning

Whether you want to speed up weighing or recover revenue with dimensioning, we have the solution that will drive your productivity and create more profitable freight, LTL and other shipping and receiving operations.

The lack of visibility to critical data when using manual dimensioning, weighing, and scanning systems leads to major processing issues including:

  •  Lost or damaged freight
  •  Customer disputes or back charges
  •  Inefficient loading routes

Real-Time Pallet Data for Air Freight

Freight Solutions Guide – FAQ

What's ltl freight? What does ltl freight mean? How does ltl freight work?

LTL means "less-than-load" or "less-than-truckload." LTL freight includes shipments that do not fill an entire truck, typically comprised of smaller parcels over 150 lbs which are palletized for transportation. LTL freight from multiple businesses is combined at hubs or distribution centers to fill a truck whenever possible to make this method of transportation more cost-efficient.

METTLER TOLEDO offers freight dimensioning systems, freight solutions and LTL solutions to support the efficient processing of LTL freight. Our freight dimensioning systems, like the TLD870 Static Pallet Dimensioner, capture dimensions in seconds and can integrate these with weight and ID data for invoicing, pricing and load planning decisions.

How to determine freight class? What is ltl freight class?

LTL freight class determines the cost for a shipment based on four characteristics: density, stowability, handling and liability. The National Motor Freight Traffic Association (NMFTA) provides the guidelines to determine freight classes in order to set standard prices for LTL shipments.

Freight dimensioning systems combined with floor or forklift scales enable you to determine freight class quickly by measuring the height, width, depth and weight of each shipment. Freight solutions, or LTL solutions, including automated pallet dimensioning reduce handling time—from 3-4 minutes down to just 3-4 seconds per pallet. This can significantly enhance your productivity and throughput.

What is dimensional freight? What is over dimensional freight?

Dimensional freight uses volumetric weight as a pricing technique for commercial freight transport. The dimensional weight is calculated using a formula which takes pallet length, width and height into consideration. The shipping fee is then based upon the dimensional weight or the actual weight, whichever is greater.

Freight dimensioning systems enable you to determine if your shipment meets the legal requirements for dimensional freight. Investing in freight solutions and LTL solutions allows you to dimension your freight to prevent costly shipping back charges, increase revenue recovery and remain compliant.
