How Does FTIR Spectroscopy Work?
FTIR, short for "Fourier transform infrared", works by detecting specific frequencies of light that correspond to the vibrational bond energies within molecules. When the energy of the vibration matches the mid-infrared light, the bond absorbs that energy. Since different bonds vibrate at distinct energies, they absorb different wavelengths of IR radiation. The resulting spectrum, with its individual absorption bands in terms of position and intensity, forms a unique molecular fingerprint.
