Complexometric Determination of Palladium Content

Photometric Back-Titration of Unreacted EDTA against Standard Zinc Sulfate

This application note provides a detailed method for the determination of palladium content by complexometric titration with fully automated METTLER TOLEDO Excellence Titrators and DP5 phototrode.

How Is Palladium Content Determined?

Palladium is a precious metal used in electroplating, catalytic converters, jewelry, dentistry, blood sugar test strips, aircraft spark plugs, surgical instruments, and electrical contacts. The extensive application of palladium reveals the significance of the precise determination of its concentration.  

In this application note, palladium content is determined by complexometric titration. Palladium readily forms a strong complex with EDTA at pH 4 to 5. The unreacted excess EDTA in the solution is back titrated against a standard zinc sulfate solution which in turn gives the concentration of the reacted EDTA and thereby the concentration of palladium. Xylenol orange is used as a photometric indicator to visibly indicate the endpoint and the DP5 Phototrode™ as a titration sensor.
