In the beer industry, color measurements are an important parameter in quality and process control. UV Vis spectroscopy is a convenient and accurate method of beer color measurement, carried out using the UV5 Excellence spectrophotometer from METTLER TOLEDO in this application note. It contains step-by-step instructions for the setup of routine operations for beer color measurements. For more information about this application, proceed to download below.
How is beer color measured?
In order to obtain the beer color, two fixed wavelength measurements are conducted. The absorbance value at each wavelength is automatically converted to a beer color value in EBC or ASBC units using a predefined method within the spectrophotometer software. Beer types can be distinguished according to their color, e.g. a Pale Ale should have an EBC value of about 18. Our UV/VIS Excellence instruments can measure the color of beer precisely, saving precious bench space by reducing the number of instruments needed in a laboratory.
