FAQs

What are the advantages of using an electronic repeater pipette?

Repeater pipettes are most often used to simplify repetitive pipetting. They are the preferred pipette for handling viscous and volatile liquids.

The Rainin NanoRep electronic repeater pipette offers these additional benefits:

•   Non-contact dispensing with No Touch Off™ dispense

•   Large sub-microliter volume range of 100 – 990 nanoliters, with a lowest aliquot volume of 100 nanoliters and increments of 10 nL

•   Ergonomics: Push-button tip eject, joystick control, and automatic dispensing of aliquots in set intervals down to 0.5 seconds

•   Protocol-saving

•   100 nL – 50 mL volume range with just 3 syringe tips, with up to 1,000 aliquots from a single aspiration in any tip

What pipette offers the lowest possible dispensed volume?

The Rainin NanoRep, an electronic multi-dispenser pipette, can deliver aliquots down to 100 nanoliters. It also offers very fine increments – down to 1/10,000th of a syringe tip’s nominal volume. While its smallest aliquot capability is 100 nanoliters, its smallest increment is just 10 nanoliters.

What repeater pipette will allow for the most aliquots per tip?

The Rainin NanoRep, an electronic repeater, offers up to 1,000 aliquots from any of its three syringe tips: 100 µL, 10 mL and 50 mL. Other repeater pipettes offer ten times fewer aliquots per tip – just 100 or less.

Using a pipette, can I conduct non-contact dispensing?

Any air-displacement pipette tip must touch off on the vessel for a complete dispense. The Rainin NanoRep is the first handheld pipette to offer No Touch Off dispensing (non-contact), which helps reduce cross-contamination risk and speeds up workflows.

What does non-contact dispensing mean in pipetting?

Non-contact dispensing means dispensing a liquid volume without touching the pipette tip to the wall of the vessel. Achieving non-contact dispensing requires specially designed tips as well as an extremely precise pulse movement to fully eject an exact volume. With its proprietary No Touch Off dispense technology, NanoRep is the only handheld pipetting device that can multi-dispense aliquots without the physical requirement of touching the tip to the vessel wall to ensure a complete dispense.

Does the Rainin NanoRep replace the Rainin AutoRep E?

Yes, the NanoRep electronic repeater pipette replaces the Rainin AutoRep E, which is no longer available.

Can I autoclave an electronic repeater pipette?

No, this is not recommended. Do not autoclave electronic repeater pipettes like the Rainin NanoRep.

Can I autoclave repeater syringe tips?

Do not autoclave syringe tips. The extreme conditions in autoclaving (high pressure/high temperature) may alter the physical dimensions of the tip housing (capillary) and/or the piston. Additionally, moisture may be trapped, and this could adversely affect results (i.e. unwanted dilution) in applications that are water sensitive. For applications that require a high level of sterility/cleanliness, it is highly recommended to use pre-sterilized syringe tips that are compatible with the repeater pipette.

Can NanoRep dispense variable volumes in a sequence?

The Rainin NanoRep electronic repeater pipette can dispense variable volumes in a sequence using the fixed volumes list in advanced mode. However, switching between fixed volumes requires manual selection between each aliquot. NanoRep cannot be set to dispense, for example 3 different volumes, then dispense those same 3 volumes again, repetitively.

What’s the difference between a repeater pipette and a standard electronic pipette?

There are a few differences. A repeater pipette is a positive-displacement pipette, where the syringe tip includes a built-in plastic piston that reaches to the opening of the tip.

This makes the system extremely accurate, and also superior for handling challenging liquids such as viscous or volatile liquids. By contrast, standard electronic pipettes use an air-displacement system where the disposable tip is hollow. When inserted into a liquid to aspirate, air moves up and down within the pipette as liquid is aspirated and dispensed. While very accurate, this is less accurate than positive-displacement pipetting, and works less well for viscous and volatile liquids.

Repeater pipettes are designed primarily to deliver one function: dispense multiple aliquots of the same volume. This is why they are often simply called “dispensers.” Electronic pipettes often include features beyond the delivery of multiple aliquots, such as mixing and titrating.

Why should I use a repeater pipette instead of a standard electronic pipette?

Due to their accuracy, reliability, and efficiency – as well as they are better suited for viscous and volatile liquids.

Repeater pipettes are the best choice to repetitively dispense liquid volumes with the highest level of accuracy. Designed to reliably produce exact replicates, electronic repeater pipettes boost efficiency by offering paced-interval automatic dispensing.

How does the Rainin NanoRep work?

NanoRep contains two ultra-precise motors. One moves the piston the given distance for the volume set by the user, and the other provides the pulse that makes No Touch Off™ dispense possible.

What is “Manual Viscosity Selection”?

NanoRep offers a way to adjust the device’s operation based on the viscosity of the liquid being aspirated and dispensed. This is to heighten accuracy and minimize bubble formation and/or splashing when working with different liquid viscosities.

What is “Dispense Type” and what’s the difference between “No Touch Off” and “Touch Off”?

It’s common practice in pipetting to complete the dispensing of a volume by wiping the end of the pipette tip on the wall of the vessel in order to assure a full dispense. This is “Touch Off” pipetting. Touch Off pipetting makes use of the surface-contact capillary action of liquid to pull any residual droplet off the end of the pipette tip into the dispensing vessel.

A revolutionary new technology in NanoRep allows No Touch Off dispensing. With No Touch Off, a completely full, accurate aliquot can be dispensed without wiping the tip on the wall of the vessel or “touching off.” No contact is made between the pipette and the dispensing vessel.

What are the two gray buttons on the side of NanoRep used for?

The gray side buttons on NanoRep are one way to manually dispense aliquots. A downward motion of the joystick also dispenses an aliquot. And NanoRep can also dispense aliquots automatically, at user-set intervals down to 0.5 seconds. With this option – called Auto Pace – no button-pushing is required for dispensing aliquots.

Why do repeater pipettes have so many syringe tips (consumables)? Can I work with fewer syringe tips?

Standard repeaters can be used to dispense a wide range of aliquots. This range is usually between 1 µL and 50 mL. Because of this large range and because of the increments desired within it, it is impossible to use one syringe. For these types of instruments, customers can use up to ten different types of syringe tips to cover the range and they can dispense up to 100 aliquots of any tip's smallest nominal volume (1%).

The Rainin NanoRep only uses 3 tips because of the far higher number of possible aliquots per tip (1,000, compared to 100 on other repeaters). Those repeaters must make up for their fewer possible aliquots per tip by offering a greater number of tip sizes. Alternatively, NanoRep’s far higher number of possible aliquots per tip mean that fewer tips are necessary. NanoRep also offers the largest range by pushing significantly below one microliter – from 100 nanoliters to 50 milliliters.

How do I charge NanoRep?

To charge NanoRep, simply open the gray rubber cover on the top of the device and insert the micro-USB end of the charging cable into the port. Plug the other end of the charging cable into a wall outlet.

How long will NanoRep keep working on one charge?

Length of charge varies based on usage. NanoRep can be used when it is being charged. In general, if used continuously, NanoRep should work 1.5–2 hours on a single charge.

Is there a stand for NanoRep?

Yes, a non-charging stand is available as an accessory for NanoRep.
