Hexavalent Chromium in Water Using UV Vis Spectroscopy

Simple Method, Quick Results, and Reliable Content Determination

This application note provides a method for determining the chromium (VI) content in water samples using METTLER TOLEDO's UV/Vis spectrophotometer.

When you download this application package, you will receive a PDF of the application note as well as the required data for the LabX™ UV Vis spectrophotometry software method.

Why is chromium (VI) determination important?

Water samples may contain chromium in the form of Cr (III) and/or Cr (VI) at different concentrations. Cr (VI) is more toxic than Cr (III), so its determination is of specific interest to the water and waste effluent industries.

How is chromium (VI) content determined?

This application note focuses on chromium (VI) content determination in water samples using a UV/Vis spectrophotometer. Chromium (VI) combines with diphenylcarbazide in a strongly acidic solution to produce a red-violet complex. The absorbance of this complex is measured at 540 nm to determine the hexavalent chromium.
