Manual and semi-automatic melting point meters are being replaced by automatic melting point meters for many critical reasons. Even though automatic melting meters are more expensive, it is a necessary investment.

This white paper gives a description of the advantages and disadvantages of the following instruments:

Manual melting point determination:

The manual method involves using a circulating liquid bath or an open flame to heat the recipient where the capillaries rest. In manual setups, the operator monitors the temperature with a thermometer and decides by eye when the melting point has been reached.

Semi-automatic melting point determination:

Semi-automatic melting point meters differ according to their degree of automation. These devices offer several advantages over manual methods, such as more accurate temperature measurements, the ability to select different temperature ramps, a more stable assembly, and elements that aid in the visualization of capillaries. Nevertheless, the detection system relies on the human eye, just as with manual determination.

Automatic melting point determination:

Fully automatic melting point instruments are equipped with automated detection systems, typically utilizing transmittance or video/image analysis for measurements. The operator only needs to prepare the sample, place it in the capillary, and start the measurement, which helps to minimize human error and significantly increases
