FAQs

What is a retractable housing?

A retractable housing is a process connection for an analytical sensor that provides a secure way for a sensor to be removed from a process for calibration, cleaning or replacement, without interrupting the ongoing process. METTLER TOLEDO offers a range of manual and pneumatic retractable armatures that are designed for operation in environments ranging from sterile and hygienic to dirty, industrial production. These retractable housing models are available to suit specific user requirements with diverse materials, process connections and insertion lengths. Retractable sensor holders can also be integrated with EasyClean cleaning automation systems for easy sensor rinsing, flushing and calibration.

What are the different METTLER TOLEDO retractable housing models available?

METTLER TOLEDO offers a variety of retractable housing models to suit specific user requirements and process conditions. The InTrac 776e retractable housing is designed for applications in processes which utilize pH/ORP sensors that have a liquid electrolyte reference system.

InTrac 777e /779e retractable housings are specifically designed for applications in processes which utilize 12mm sensors for measuring pH, ORP, dissolved oxygen, CO2, conductivity and turbidity (InTrac 779e). These three models have a flushing chamber in which the electrode can be cleaned and calibrated if necessary, both accomplished without interruption of the process.

The InTrac 797e /799e retractable housing family is a sterilizable housing that has a double flushing chamber and is designed to meet the highest demands where sterile conditions are required.

InTrac 785/787 is a rugged, retractable housing for the most demanding industrial applications and includes an anti-blowout tip and ball valve for additional process safety.

What should you consider when selecting a sensor housing?

The primary considerations when a sensor housing is selected are:

  • Stationary or retractable design
  • Process connection compatibility
  • Insertion length
  • Wetted part materials
  • Process seal materials
  • International compliances e.g. ATEX/ FM approval to be installed in ex-classified area, USP Class VI compliance seals etc.
  • And in many cases, a sensor protective cage is essential to protect the sensor tip from damage in high particle load samples

What METTLER TOLEDO cleaning devices are available with retractable housings?

METTLER TOLEDO offers a series of EasyClean automated cleaning systems that can be integrated with retractable housing models to meet different user requirements. EasyClean 100 and EasyClean 150 take care of basic rinsing for minimally contaminated sensors. EasyClean 200e offers a solution for sensors subject to heavy fouling. EasyClean 400 is a completely automatic system for pH loops, rinsing, cleaning and calibration. And finally, EasyClean 400X is for hazardous areas that require special equipment.
